Are these gears a drop in?
Are these gears a drop in?
alright I'm REALLY new to transmissions and was wondering if these gears would fit without any modification of the transmission?

My car is a 1992 camaro rs with the stock auto transmission (it is on the list they show but this is ebay were talking about

Re: Are these gears a drop in?
You'll need to change your speedo gear, but otherwise the trans doesn't care. In case you don't realize it, you can't just drop these gears in your rear. They have to be correctly setup or will be noisy and live a short life. Correctly setting them up is usually a job for pros.
Re: Are these gears a drop in?
alright thanks!! the speedo gear shouldn't be an issue. I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic and is awesome with all types of trannys so he would be doing most of the work(he doesn't know that yet). I just didn't know if there were any other parts I needed.

Re: Are these gears a drop in?
Drop in isn't really a good term to use. Are those gears the correct size for your diff, yes. Are they a direct drop in, maybe.
Those gears are designed for a 3 series carrier. Without knowing what gears are in you current diff, it's hard to say if they're a direct swap. You may have a 2 series carrier. You would either have to get a spacer ring or a 3 series carrier to use those gears. If the 3.42 gears are better than what you already have then I would assume you have a 2 series carrier.
Your 92 will have 28 spline axles so if you decide to upgrade to a 3 series carrier (posi), you will need one for the 7-1/2, 7-5/8 10 bolt that uses 28 spline axles.
If you're searching for better gears, they don't need to be specifically from a third gen. Any GM 10 bolt gears for 7-1/2, 7-5/8 will work even if they're from an S10.
Other parts required usually means an installation kit with a new pinion seal, axle seals and shims.

Re: Are these gears a drop in?
...sounds like you have a few things mixed up. You change gears in the rear differential. The only transmission worked involved is changing the speedometer drive gears in the tail-housing to correct for the difference in rear gearing.
Re: Are these gears a drop in?
Actually that was a typo, I realize that the gears are changed in the differential with the speedo being in the tranny. So to clear this up I will either need a posi unit to use the gears or a spacer ring? I have looked for a spacer ring but have not found one online anyone know off the top of their head who sells them?
