700R4?
I have a question about my transmission. I am sure this has been asked several times but I have searched to no avail. I have an 89 RS with the 2.8. DOes anyone know what auto transmissions were offered that year? What I am wondering is do I have the 700R4?

Re: 700R4?
Yes, the 700R4 was first offered in 1983 and became the only automatic available starting in 1984. That includes your '89. But you have a V6 version of the 700R4, which has less beefy parts inside it, and a different bellhousing bolt pattern compared to the V8 version of the 700R4.

Re: 700R4?
Thanks for the info. So if I planned to rebuild it I could get one from a v-8 and put my bell housing on it? Then have a beefier trans behind the v-6.

Re: 700R4?
The bellhousing on a 700R4 is part of the trans. It is not removeable like on a manual trans.
You can build up a V6 700R4 to have the same strength as a V8 model.

Re: 700R4?
I build these things everday
Just like KEVIN91Z said you can beef up the V6 pretty easily. The input sprag and low reverse sprag are smaller, has less clutches in the 3-4 clutch pack, some really early ones had one less in the reverse input clutch too. Anywayz you can do about anything you wanna either way. Good luck man!
