old 4 speed, bolt up question
old 4 speed, bolt up question
hey, its a old 60 or 61 heavy duty(like 2 ton or whatever they were back then) truck down on the farm. its got a straight six, like a 240something or somethingi dont really know, and a 4 speed on the floor. well me and my buddy are building a dune buggy out of old parts we got layin around and i was wondering if this tranny willl bolt to a SBC. ive been told the bellhousings are the same and all, but no one knows about the flywheel and clutch assem. and before i spend a day in the briars pulling the bitch, id like to know if its of any use to me. if i gotta get a clutch and flywheel, its gonna cost me a arm and a leg and it aint really worth the effort.
theres also a 49 one ton with a 215 i think, would it be any diff or the same deal?
please help me out guys

If that's the trans I'm thing it is, it will weigh more than the whole rest of the dune buggy. I don't think it's really what you're looking for.
But to answer your question, yes it will bolt up. The 6 in those days was either a 194 or a 235. It had the same bolt pattern as a V8. The crank flange is different though, you might have to find a V8 truck to get a flywheel from.

so the tranny will work but im f ed on a flywheel?? im not really worried bout the wieght if it aint too terrible. we got a good minitruck frame to strap it too, and the more weight we got in the bottom, the lees likely she is to roll on us. what about that 49 truck? same deal?
oh, could i make the flywheel work? i mean, i got a torch, and all its gotta do is hold together, it aint like its a daily driver. were gonna dog the **** out of it on the powerlines.

I'm not kidding when I say it will weigh more than the dune buggy. I had one of those things sitting in my garage for a while, it literally weighed as much as an engine. You might as well put a big block on a skateboard and try to drive that, it's just the wrong thing altogether for a vehicle that's supposed to be light and nimble, and not sink up to its axles in the sand the first time you spin the wheels.

if thats the case, f that. when you said heavy i thought you meant like 200 or so, not that damn heavy. so, anyone got a half shot manual they wanna donate to the "create a junk buggy" collection?
