what torque converter

Right now im upgrading from a t-5 to a 700r4 with the TCI Pro transmission rebuild with the shift kit. Its going to be behind 383 fully forged with a possible 100-200 shot of nitrous...the cam is a comp XE284 im hoping to have 400 rwhp all said and done w/o the N2O...N2O is going to be a later upgrade once i get some cash this summer...

ok now to the question: How high of a stall torque converter should i be looking to get? Im hoping to get into low 12s all said and done but also be somewhat street friendly...

Thanks, Chas

Re: what torque converter

with near 400whp you'll be more like mid 11's if that car aint too heavy and you have a good launch in the mid 1.5's to 1.60 range 60 foot.

For your setup i'd get a custom converter from Edge Racing, Yank, Precision Industries/etc. Have them build it with the intention of running nitrous. I'd look for something in the 3500-3600 range

I had a 400whp 383 this past year. Peak hp at 6300 rpm and peak torque was from 4000-4500. I ran a 3600 stall Edge converter and it was great. Got me 11.4's in the 1/4 in July heat. Very streetable. If your concerned, tell them you street drive it alot and dont wanna get to crazy with it. Maybe a 3200-3400 stall.

That will work great. Remember, the Nitrous is gonna make it stall abit higher so you want to be alittle on the lower side for the on motor performance. My 3600 became more like 3800-4000 on the juice

Re: what torque converter

The XE284 needs a 2800 stall for street/strip and 3300 for full race. As mentioned above, using NOS will require a slightly higher stall speed because the engine will be making more torque. I'd only recommend the slightly higher stall speed only if it was going to be race only. If you intend to drive on the street, keep the stall speed closer to 2800.

What you give up at the track will make up for in driveability on the street since you said you do want it to be street friendly.

Re: what torque converter

So if a converter has an option for a 3 clutch for mainly street would it be better to take it or leave it out.
