9 bolt carrier questions.....

I have a carrier that I picked up from a buddy for a 9 bolt rear. My question is, how do I tell for sure if it is a 3 series carrier? I am taking his word for it, but before I go to a shop for an install and gear change, how can I be sure in my own mind that I have the right stuff? The carrier is sitting on my workbench, so measurments/ numbers / ?? are easy to get. There is a 3:27 ring and pinion set that came with it, so that suggests to me that it is the correct part, but I am not 100% positive that this stuff is correct. Thanks for any help!

Also, I forgot to mention that the 3:27 ring gear is "thinner" than the 3:73 ring gear from Precision gear. If I lay them flat, side by side on the bench, the 3:73 gear is just over about a 1/16th "thicker" Do I make sense? Also, the pinion gear area is much smaller in diameter on the 3:73 than the 3:27 pinion. Should it be that way? Am I even making sense here? The mounting holes are perfectly the same and the spine area on the pinion look identical.....
