Manually shifting the auto?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I searched the archives and can't really find anything on it.

When shifting my 700R4 manually do I stay in the gas when I shift gears? Or do I let off while I shift? Any other tricks to it? I can't afford blowing her up right now as I'm still paying for my exhaust, but knowing how to row through the gears safely would add enjoyment to my daily driving

The only reason I've ever had to manual shift my auto is when autocrossing so I don't have to wait for a downshift when I get on the throttle after a turn. Otherwise if I'm not mistaken doesn't your tranny upshift at redline at WOT anyway?

No lifting required, just shifting.

You can do it either way. If you are drag racing, for example, then you just keep your foot planted and manually shift at slightly less rpm than you want to accomplish the shift at.

If you want to manually shift for fun, then left off the gas as you select the next higher gear. This will give a sort of 'manual trans' feel and sensation.

To downshift manually, pull the lever into the next lower gear, and at the same instant blip the throttle. That will make the tranny downshift sooner into the lower gear. If you install a shift kit, it will happen instantly.

The only reason to lift up (if you wanted to) is so the shift isn't as hard (TV valve). So you can get on it, but not have tire barking shifts if your tranny is set up to. Just depends on your mood..
