Age Old Gear Question
I am looking to put some gears in my 92 rs..my 2:73 are killing me....i want to make my speedo read as close to correctly if not a little under speed...obviously with lower gears its gonna throw my speedo off a bunch...i'm thinking 3:73 or 4:10..i know if i put in 3:73 it will make me driving 73.1% of what the sppedo says..so i need to change the drive gear to 15 and the driven gear to 45 which will make an adjustment of 72.5% the closest i can get...this also means i have to change the sleeve to part # 25007339.
How big a pain in the *** is all this..i know the sleeve isnt cheap either...not sure there are any camaros that had em stock i could get one from...hopefully someone who has done this can help out...i am thinking i could just put in some 4:56 gears making it 58% of whats on speedo and changing drive gear to a 9 tooth which would make a difference of 52% so i'd acually be going faster than it says by around 6%...what kinda effects would 4:56 haveon top speed and gas mileage?....i probably confused a lot but i'm sure those who can answer my questions know what i'm talkign about..thanks in advance

If you have a stock engine, you're milage would drop significantly and you're top speed I would doubt would reach 100 mph. If this is a daily driver some people don't even recommend 3:73's, they'll say go with 3:42's, but I myself want all the acceleration I can get so I am about to have 3:73's installed.

I changed to 3:42 in my 91 RS. I bought the speedo gears (pencil gear and the sleeve) for about $25 from the dealer. Changing the sleeve wasn't bad in my 700R4. I did break that stupid pin that holds in place even after reading the tech article on this site about it. My car dropped 5 mpg and runs 2700 RPM at 70mph.

If you from 2.73 to 3.73 it will feel like 80 to 90 hp. Of course You don't tget that it just feels that way. If you have near 300hp or planning that, don't get 4.10. You will SMOKE( not just spin or cherp) tires in 1st 2nd and 3rd. You will need slicks.

Well i decided to go with Richmond 3.73 gears...i'll need to replace the 17 tooth drive gear in the tranny with a 15 tooth gear and the 37 tooth driven with a 44 tooth driven...i know i need a sleeve for the new driven (part # 10456089) but will i need anything to change the drive to a 15? also does anyone suggest a better set of gears or even better off with a gm set? thanks a lot for your guys input
