Is the "Breakaway" torque converter a 12" stock diameter? If it is, and does not have the clutch in the torque converter, then it will produce more heat depending on the rated stall and rear end gear ratio. I have seen many problems with these type of torque converters (stock 12" diameter with the clutch removed) running hot. If you do not want a TC clutch then go to a smaller diameter 10" Continental with 2,200-2,400 rpm stall or equivalent. I use many of these type of torque converters (10") with no heat problems. The stock torque converters were not designed to run without the clutch in overdrive (most heat/highest load).
Hope This Helps!!!

You MUST use a LU converter with a 700R4 on the street.

No Ifs, Ands, or Buts.

Without lockup it will overheat (as you noticed).

Try a non lock up valve from trans go, it provides more lube oil to to the converter and prevents all the rumored problems.

I am running a non lockup converter on my 700r4 and I have experienced no problems. NO overheating. My next upgrade 700r4 will go with a non lockup also. Just be sure and put on a trans oil cooler.

There are people that swear they have had problems with it and I believe them. I do have another take on the problem though. A 350 turbo can come in a lockup or a non-lockup version. I know plenty of people running a lockup version and not using the lockup. They have had no problem with it! What is is that cooks the tranny in the 700 when it isn't locked up.

I have fried a couple form the stupid in and out of lockup problem they have. I would think that would cause a lot more heat than not having the tranny locked up. I am no tranny man and pro built knows his stuff, so I would just like some explanation. It all seems like a lot of fairytale when this topic comes up.

I had a question somewhat like this a few months ago. It was never answered. My tranny went and when I was doing the removal I found the lock up wire form the computer was cut! I wonder if that's what killed my 700?
