4 speed shifter with a 3 speed tranny?

4 speed shifter with a 3 speed tranny?
I've got the original shifter in my gta, when I got the car it had no engine or tranny. I don't want to fun a 700 r4, I will probably use a th350... will the original shifter work with the three speed tranny and just won't pull back all the way into the rear most position? or will I need another shifter?
