HELP 3.08 10bolt rear end

So i ended up needing a replacement for a axle shaft, so i popped out the rear cover and proceded to remove the needed parts, well in removal of the main pin with the set screw the top and bottom gears both came out (the smaller spyder gears) i noticed apon furthing investigation that these gears are not the same size.

Well my main problem is that i cannot seem to get the gears back into place. I was able to spin on gears back into place but when i attempt to put the second gear back in.. all it wants to do is spin in a circle, not spin into place.

Please Let me kno of any tips you may have in fixing this. Thank-you

Re: HELP 3.08 10bolt rear end

I have never seen a differntial with different size pinion gears in it. I woud guess that one of them broke at some time and someone replaced it with the wrong gear. The 7.5 has had a few different size pinion gears used in it, so it is very possible that it has the wrong one. I would also guess that the larger one is correct and the smaller one is wrong. If you push the axle gears apart you will probably be able to get the larger gear in place. You probably need to be looking for another large gear to replace the small one. It's putting all of the power through the single large gear right now and will probably break it eventually.

Re: HELP 3.08 10bolt rear end

Ok well as for as i kno the rear end is all original. Although the gears are not noticably different..it was only once i slid them on to the pin that i noticed that the teeth have more of a flat spot on one of the gears. Although the gears have been working just fine for over 20K miles. But do you have any ideas on getting the gears back into place?

Be sure that the axle gears are pushed as far apart as possible. The gears shoudl go in. Be sure that you get them exactly opposite of each other when putting them in.

You might have to use a thin screwdriver or feeler gauge to help the thrust washers into place. Be sure that the axle gears are completely seated.
