Ok 89 formula 700r4 305 lo3. when I am going down the road the car upshifts fine but when I take my foot off the gas it goes into freewheel mode "coasting". If I Manually run through the gears its ok but once again pull it from 3rd to 2nd and it freewheels rev the motor till it catches up with the tranny and it pulls hard same in 1st. This happened all at once, What could this be. The tranny just got rebuilt again for the 2nd time in 4 months last time I twisted\bent the tail shaft. What could be causing this problem, and why all at once?
Someone please help me I have no clue, can this be some trash in the valve body??? How can I fix this problem.

It sounds as though your sprag is shot. It's supposed to hold the gear under decel instead of freewheeling (like being in neutral)

You should feel engine braking in D,2, and 1. If not the O/R clutches aren't holding.

 

So whats the key to make a 700 last. This is the 5th time this tranny has been out in the last 6 months.???

 

Actually, it sounds like the SPRAG is doing its job, its the Overrun clutches like Leo mentioned thats probably at fault. As for the "key" to making them last, its hard to say because the O/R clutches isn't the most common failure. Usually its the 3-4 clutches or Reaction sun shell.

Thanks for the help guys, I took it to the shop and ........I competly blew the sprag up and I destroyed the drum. All the cluches are fine no wear at all. I have had a problem with hard parts in this tranny, So this time I had ALL of them replaced.
