going to junkyard, how do I spot 3.42 gears?
It's time to go to the junkyard again, this time for 3.42 gears from a V6 thirdgen. What's the easiest way to tell that they are 3.42s?

Look for an 85-89 2.8 with the Multiport Injection intake. Any hood you pop, if you see "2.8" on the top center aluminium intake of the engine, is a 2.8 MFPI. 82-84 were carb'd with an air cleaner, and 90-92 3.1's don't have a logo on the engine.
Oh - and make sure these V6's have automatic transmissions, too.
Make sure you also pop the rear cover off, and check the teeth of the gears to make sure they're not chewed to hell- and while you're at it, either count pinion & ring gear teeth and divide, or look for GM's stamp on the ring gear showing you the ratio. I.E. 41:11 = 3.73 gear.

Looking at the teeth is the only really sure way, just use the car option package as a way to narrow down your search... 3.42 is 41:12. It's stamped on the edge of the ring gear.
