series-2 with 3.73 gears?

First how do I even tell what carrier I have? I have a 1987 camaro z28 that came stock with a 305 TPI automatic. As far as I know the rear is stock, at least i never changed it. I'm assuming its a series 2? and that its a 10 bolt 7.5?

So if it is a series 2 carrier can you put 3.73 gears in it? I'm confused because I thought you couldn't but on Richmond's wed page it has a part for 3.73 gears for series 2 carriers but it also says series-2 Fits 3.08 and numerically lower carrier. 3 Fits 3.23 and numerically higher carrier.

thanx in advance for clearing up the confusion

First find out what gears you do have. Also check Summit and they have a thicker 3:73 gears if you have 2-series carrier.

how do i do that? i looked at the camaro tech data and it says 2.73 so i guess thats what it is because i never changed it before

So if i do have a 2 series then i can get 3.73 gears?

thanx for the link I guess i should have checked there first. So is it safe to assume that I have a series 2 carrier? (i cant check the cover because it was replaced) I'm assuming this because, if I'm reading the tech data right, it says that an 87 z28 auto came with 2.73 gears

NEVER assume...Pull the cover and check the stamping on the ring gear before ordering any parts. Better yet since this not a DIY type of project do a LOT of research FIRST and get estimates for the install costs. Parts & Labor costs may make you change your mind about this gear change idea, how dose estimate of $500/$700 strike you.
