1988 vette tranny into a '86 Iroc
1988 vette tranny into a '86 Iroc
Im installing a 1988 corvette tranny 40,000 miles into a 1986 Iroc with 160,000 miles and a 406 tpi motor. Alright; so far the tailshaft won't work. The crossmember wont work. I'm jury-rigging both now, any easy wayz? I can modify the tranny and build a crossmember, but is there an easy, cheap way? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you... My friend jerry is gonna weld up some mounts to the vette tailshaft tomorrow. And I am gonna cut a piece of 2" x 2" metal to connect the subframes and mount the tranny. Help me before i mess something up.

Isn't the tailshaft slightly shorter on the 'Vette too? If so you will be better off just taking the original shaft and tailhousing and putting it on the 'Vette tranny.</font>

What year did chevy change the IROC tailshaft housing and crossmember.
Can I look for any housing and crossmember after '88? Or maybe '87 will work? Will a '89, 90, 91, etc..work?
A new one is $250 from chevy. That is insane!
Does anyone know where I can find a picture of an '88 or similar setup? Thank you
i have an 88 vette and an 89 iroc, and i can tell you the tailshaft will have to be off an f-body, period. all vette 700R4s have a different tailshaft, and the crossmember, i dont know what to tell you. they bolt up completely different, but im sure you could make something if you got the $$$$

For some reason when i bolt up the old tailshaft housing; the output shaft is not in the center of the output bushing. The driveshaft will not go in. I am having lots of trouble locating a tailshaft housing. I can build a trans crossmember, but i dont have the equipment to weld on aluminum. I have a friend that welds aluminum, but he is gone till monday. Also, i would rather have the right housing. Do I really need to change the output shaft? Yes; it is shorter, but only about 3/8". Thanks for your help.
