TH-350 shifter linkage?

I was crawling around under my car the other day and I noticed the shifter cable wasn't attached to the shift lever on the transmission. I've just finished an engine swap, and this cable has me puzzled... A TH-350 was installed before I took the 305 out, and since I've had the car the shifter worked fine. Now, the cable isn't even connected to anything and I can't figure out how it was ever functional to begin with. The stud on the shift lever is WAY smaller than the cable's hole? I don't understand how the shift lever and cable ever managed to stay together; there is nothing that would have kept the cable attached to the stud. Anyone ever had or heard of a problem like this?
