It sounds like a problem with the Throttle Valve in the VB. This valve sends information to the rest of the tranny concerning what load you are putting it under. They tend to stick which is one of the leading causes of failure in a 700. The 1-2-1 problem could also be due to this in that the band might not be holding properly and it reverts back to 1st gear if it breaks loose.

VB = valvebody; the TV valve and sleeve are in the valvebody. The valvebody's the funny looking thing you see when you drop the pan. I just told a fellow V6 member how to remove his TV valve, the message is here: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/002330.html
Transfixleo, how would you un-stick the throttle valve? Does it just involve removing it, cleaning it, making sure it and the sleeve are free of burrs, and making sure the valve slides in/out of the sleeve without hanging up? Or, are there other things to check?

The only sure fire way is to reaplce it with the redesigned one that comes in the TransGo Shift Kit or Reprogramming Kit. This has a whole new TV Sytem to operate it so it won't likely ever stick again. By the way, after @1985, they stopped using the sleave nd I prefer not to take the sleave out if it is there because it can have problems going back in.
