what is good or bad about a 9 bolt rear???
what is good or bad about a 9 bolt rear???
ive got a 10 bolt open 2.73 and have a chance to buy a 9 bolt 3.40?(i thought it was 3.42) with positive traction. what are the pros and cons of the 9 bolt.

Good = fairly strong
Bad = very few parts available, brakes suck

The 9 bolt also has bolt in axles. No C-clips. It's superior to the 10 bolt except for it's major downfall, lack of parts and gear ratio avalability.

Parts are not hard to find anymore (but unfortunately they are still not that cheap),
My disk brake 9 bolt stops fine.
Actually, they are stronger because they have 4 spider gears and 2 side gears (instead of 2 and 2), have 28 spline axles (and I can get 'em in 31 spline version with a spool), they are a cone style posi vs clutches, they have disk brakes, they have axle retaining flanges instead of c clips, have disk brakes, they are better than a 10 bolt but not as good as a 9 inch, they are cheaper than a 9 inch but not as cheap as a 10 bolt, etc... It is somewhere between a 10 bolt and a 9 inch (or 12 bolt) in most every aspect, but then of course, I am biased

The brakes are the same in 9-bolts and 10-bolts, there is no difference. Except 9-bolts are all disc brakes.
82-88 is the smaller brakes, 89-92 is the larger brakes.
