Automatic will not shift???

Yesterday i pulled out of work, Started to gain speed still in first. Noticed that my car was not shifting out of first and was reving at about 4000 before I released the pedal and then it shifted to second. The same thing happened fron 2 to 3rd gear. Then Not know and I had to get home I drove on th interstate doing the speed limit at 65... with rpms at 2500... For some reason it wouldn't go in OD...

Checked the Tranny fluid and a friend said it smelt burt. but there was some in there...

ANYONE HAVE any clue....??? Hope its a quick fix....??

Thanks, Steve

I recently had the exact same problem. It was the governor valve.

any other ideas.. A friends said that I should flush the tranny fluid(completely) because with the burnt(or what seems to be burnt fluid) It gets thin and cant build pressure to shift!

This sound right to you?

Thanks

is there a modulator on your tranny if so make sure it has manifold vacuum

and is you fluid at the full mark, not a little low or high?
it has to be pretty near dead on to get the right line presure(hink thats how it works anyways)
keep me informed

if i was you i would check your cable that runs up near your throttle i don't know exactly what its called but my car wouldn't shift until 5500 all the time and my mechanic who i must say is the king of chevs adjusted that and the car shifts perfect now . i would check that first though might save you some money

Try this: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the D button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Ok, i took my car to the shop.. The guy has worked on my car a couple of times... Took a test driver with him and he said it was the Tranmission was skipping 2nd... He manually shifted it from 1st to second and nothing happened. He then switched it to 3rd right after and then it changed gears.. Said It would have to be rebuilt/replaced. I asked him about the overdrive problem.. It wouldn't go into overdrive.. He said that 2 and 4th are some how working together.. MEaning if 2nd is bad then so is 4th/OD. And thats why the OD is was not working.

So any of you think he is pulling my leg or does that sound like what needs to be done.

He also said he would get me out the door around $900 including tax. Siad that he would be able to put in a corvet servo?? and do the tourqe converter.. and put different(material) bands or something on it... Just looking for some input and suggestions..

Thanks

I think he's pulling your leg. 3rd and 4th are on the same clutch pack, not 2cd and 4th.
That's why our 700s like to lose 3rd and overdrive at the same time.
There may be some other thing linking 2cd and OD, but i cant think of one, let us know smart guys.

The band is for 2nd and 4th. Now I HAVE seen where you could have one or the other because while it IS the same band, they use two different servo's to apply it.

maybe if your lucky it's only the lower val. body. for a rebuild from the junkyard is around 500-600 clams. for a used tranny to get you by is around 150 to 300. the guy is right, your leg is getting pulled
