tranny only has 1-4. could it be no fluid in it

tranny only has 1-4. could it be no fluid in it
I bought a used t56 on ebay and i just got around to putting it in my 91z28. there is no fluid in it yet but i was checking it out and it only goes into 1st thru 4th. could it be from not having fluid in it for a while or from sitting around? it has 27K on it from what the seller said. will this go away when i add fluid and finally get car running?

oil wouldn't hurt to make things work better, why didn't you check it out before you put it in? why don't you put some oil in it now and see if it helps instead of asking if it will?

Is it First then only fourth or first second, third, then fourth, if it is the first then only fourth then it is simple. THe fourth gen f-body has a skip shift solinoid that under part throttle shifting or (just crusing) the trans will skip 2nd and third and go directly to fourth to be more econmical. sevral companies offer the skip shift eliminator for the fourth gen cars but i don't know if it will work on yours. YOu also may have to wire it up so it won't skip the shifts.

i just added redline fluid to the t56 and it still only has 1st thru 4th. I still have not turned over the new motor yet so the only thing i could do was have my buddy hold the clutch in as I spun the driveshaft in the availible gears to try and get fluid on all the gears. the trans shifter still wont even go over to the right. if it is in the nutruel postion all i can do is go straight up and down or left and up and down. it fells like it is hitting something something. its not mushy like when you try and go to reverse witht he reverse lockout deactivated. whats up with this trans
