Topic says it all. I have the 700-R4 in my '86 IROC that someone smartly ( ) changed to an early '84 unit. I had the tranny built and aferwards I found out by the builder that it was the 27 spline (greeeat). I may use it temporarily behind my 350 before I break it, but will replace it soon eitherway...my friend wants it for his very low-buck '89 305 TBI IROC that has a slipping tranny and the 30 spline trans. I know it's got the electrical speedo...it looks like I could swap the two senders...what is involved? Do I change the tailshaft housings or just the senders...gears in output shaft...is it even possible? Please let me know before I sell him my tranny...would suck to pull it out and find out it won't work! Thanks!

I just recently was facing the same issue with a tranny that I bought. The owner of the local speed shop said that the mechanical ones can be changed to VSS.
I dont know how complicated it is but IM hoping not very because I will soon have to do it too.

If you're smart enough to operate a 10mm box wrench, you can do it.

Cool. I was hoping it didn't use a cast gear or something the required changing the ouptput shaft or some similar thing. Looked straightforward...thanks for the help

dhirocz,

Your friends 89 IROC still uses a cable driven speedo. Camaro's didn't get the electronically driven speedo until 1990. Birds got it around 87.

Oh, well that clears up the air! Now that I think of it, my Dad's '84 T/A and my Mom's '88 GTA are different...the GTA is an electronic speedo. I thought they were both the same year. That helps alot! thanks!
