12 Bolt on 83 Camaro
12 Bolt on 83 Camaro
Hello,
Is it possible to get a 12 bolt drum onto a 83 Berlinetta coupe with no problem or would I have to modifie things?
Is there any rearends I can get at the yard that would go right onto my Camaro? Besides the ****ty 10 bolt 7.5 rear end drum !! I hate that damn thing......
Your help is needed and most appricated.
Erik

Since a 12 bolt never came on a Thirdgen, you have 2 choices. You can "modify" things or you can buy a custom 12 bolt housing that is built to fit the ThirdGen from someone such as Moser. Yes there are better 10-bolts with 7.625" ring gears, posi's and discs. Or 9-bolts with 7.75" ring gear, posi & discs. The 10-bolts would be more common that the Borg Warner 9-bolts though. Keep an eye out at the local Pick-A-Part of contact a ThirdGen Used parts supplier. I've bought two 9-bolts used with 3.27 gear ratios for $200-$300.

The only way you could install a factory 12 bolt found in the junk yard into a third gen is to convert your rear suspension to ladder bars or a 4-link.
The problem is that there's no way to attach the torque arm to the 12 bolt diff. An aftermarket 12 bolt for third gens have a mounting pad cast into the housing for the TA to attach to.
If you choose to convert the rear suspension, try to find a 12 bolt from a first gen f-body. It will be narrow enough to fit under a third gen. 12 bolts from trucks or A/G bodies are too wide.
Nothing wrong with a 7.5 diff if it's properly built up. I'm still using one but plan on going to a 9" this winter just to get a deeper gear ratio and larger axles.

The Borg Warner 9 bolt is stronger than the 10 bolt. Gears to 4.10 are available (and so are new carriers)

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES, it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. I currently have 4.10 gear sets and new series 3 carriers in stock for 9 bolts
