Rear end grinding

I recently took my 86 Z-28 out and my rear end sounds like its grinding. At low speeds the noise isnt too bad, but as I go faster it hits a dull roar. It sounds like it may be coming from the right side of the rear axle area. Any suggestions or ideas before I rip apart my rear end? thanks for the help!

Re: Rear end grinding

There is a slow leak from the tranny area(2 to 3 drops per day if that). I had the pinion seal R2d as well as a tranny filter/fluid change about 3 months ago at a local transmission shop here in Tucson. it didnt start leaking again until it sits for a couple of days. If it's driven daily, no worries.

Re: Rear end grinding

sounds to me like a bearing. Did the shop replace the crush sleeve when they did the pinion bearing? If not, they owe you some free work.

Re: Rear end grinding

They said they replaced the crush seal, but I dont really know. I can only take their word on it! Any chance it could be a U-Joint going out? Also if i go to r2 the bearing, what all do I need to buy? This is my 1st time messing with a rear end..so I dunno what 2 buy!

There is no need to replace the crush sleeve if you're putting in a new pinion seal. You just need to put the nut back in the same place or watch the torque so you don't crush the existing one more and overload the bearings.
