HELP! ricevan 96 grand voyager slips a little on takeoff could it be the tqconverter?
Yea rice van
Mother in laws so I have to give so input on what could be wrong.
So here goes.
v6 3.0 non od, 3speed.
The van kinda slips or doesent quite lock up on take off mostly in reverse a little in 1st. It doesent matter if its cold or warm so I think the tq converter could be going bad. There has been no indication of burnt clutches and no trash in the pan. The van shifts fine and doesent slip when driving only on take off. So could I assume the tq converter "could" be the problem.
Its a shot in the dark but 50/50 I might hit something
Thanks SSC

Figure this much, $2000 to have it rebuilt. The Chrysler FWD tranny are FAMOUS for this. If you get 100K outta one, your lucky.

First off it shouldn't be that much since it is the three speed A670, not the A604 O/D. I am not totally clear on what it happening. There is nothing common between Reverse and Drive, 1st gear. That would tend to support your theory about a converter problem. Is this by any chance a problem that occurs first thing in the AM but is then OK?

Kinda like you step on the gas and relase a clutch very slowly. Its very silimalr to when your low on trans fluid.
Thanks so far guys!

A bad converter definately can give a slip sensation, often accompanied by a whine. Are you SURE that it is full? Perhaps try some extra oil (sometimes the factory has them marked wrong/wrong stick).

I admit I suck when it come to transmittions, but a 300$ converter sounds much better than a 1500$ rebuild "brownie points with the inlaws". Tranny shops here will not diagnose fairly, they pull the trans and put it on a dyno and rebuild at thier descrestion. Funny thing is they replace the converter on rebuild as a standard practice. SO either way its getting a new converter.
Thanks for the input Leo!

EDIT: I just called and asked for another description of what the problem is. "REVERSE,
Its like the emergency brake is on and you need to give it alot of gas to get moving"
