t-56 master slave not working

i'm in the middle of installing a t-56 from a t-5 and i just got finished putting in the new master/slave cylinder. but there seems to be a problem. the pushrod won't push in when i hit the clutch pedal. it's not a problem with the rod coming off the pedal, it just won't push in. any suggestions. oh and the slave isn't attatched to the bellhousing yet. do you think i have air in the system? if so do i have to get a whole new setup? thanks in advance

I saw this with mine also, while the slave cyl was just dangling under the car.

It went away after I bled and mounted the slave, so I guess it's designed behavior.

To bleed it, I did the Helms procedure of holding the slave vertically w/ the piston pointing downward and gently pushed the piston inward to max travel several times.

YOu need to have it mounted on the clutch. If you have it out the rod on the slave cylinder will extend and suck fluid from the resorviour. So basically you are pushing on a "capped" hydraulic line. if the slave rod was pushed bak into the housing and you held it you would be able to push the piston back out. When you buy one new from GM it has a strap on it to keep the piston down. You install it and then press on the clutch and teh starp pops off. Essentially your strap has already popped off and caused the piston to extend leaving no room for it to go out any further. Thus you can't push down on the pedal. While installing it on the trans push the rod against the clutch fork and it will go back in. Bolt it down and I bet it will work.

Sorry I may have rambled.
