Need help puting tranny back together.

Ok. I got my tranny apart, now I need help puting it back together. The tail housing won't make it all the way to bolt to the main case. I can't see anything binding, what could it be?

Did you take the speedometer drive gear out of the tailshaft housing?

Yes I did, should I put it back in? It would seem to me it should be easier to put it back together with it removed. It sure seems hard to get alot of help here, not many people answer my threads. Although that would be understandable today.

I was thinking if you didn't, it wouldn't go back on. Since you did, I'm now over my head.

Perhaps transfixleo or Probuilt will respond.

If you see nothing in the way, and there are no dents in the seal area and the speedometer gear is not installed in the extension housing, then try tightening each of the bolts a half a turn at a time to see if you can draw it in evenly. It should be ok, do not forget the O-ring seal.

I've tried that, it was really scary. it sounded like someting was grinding, or squealing, like two metal parts compresing against each other. And when I got it to within 1/2 inch, niether the input or output shafts would move. Theres gotta be something wrong inside.

Sound to me like one of the clutches was not all the way engaged when you put it back together. This would cause the output shaft to be misaligned. My suggestion is to inspect the output shaft to make sure that it is in the center of the tail shaft when the tailshaft is square. If you find that the output shaft is misaligned then tear it back down and inspect the 3-4 clutches for evidence of damage from not being fully engaged. No matter what the problem is if the shafts bind up as it is assembled the transmission must be torn down to find what was not assembled correctly. Also do not try to force the tailshaft down using the bolts. It should go all the way down with minimal pressure. Tightening the tailshaft bolts with the output shaft misaligned may break the input drum the forward ring gear or both.
