You're more of an expert than I am :P What I'm doing actually is looking for the whole assembled gears/carrier to plug into my rear end in place of what I have. My rear end is posi, and obviously I don't want to lose that. I'm not much of a rear end expert, and I was curious what to look for. Is there a danger of ending up with a peg-leg?

Yes.... ALL 9 bolts were posi rears. Also, there are NO aftermarket gears for the 9 bolt rear and the gears for a 9 bolt, through GM, are well over $500 ... I have a friend with an Iroc that checked into it because he wants bigger gears in his 9bolt. I, as well, have a 9bolt rear end with disc brakes... but it's 2.77 gears. My advice to you is, if you're going to get a 9 bolt rear end, try to find one with decent gears in it... or get a 10 bolt rear. It's not as strong as the 9 bolt rear but it's more versatile and affordable as far as changing the gears go. Then, of course, there's the Ford 9" rear which is by far the best rear end for your thirdgen... but you will pay.

Maybe I need some more info on this swap. I have the 9 bolt 2.77 posi-disc in my car already. My original intent was to move to a 10 bolt for cost reasons, but it doesn't seem that they can be built reliably to handle the kind of power my motor is going to make. This is almost exclusively a street car, so reliability is one of my biggest concerns. I talked to several people, including Art Houser, who just laughed when I told him what I wanted.
I looked at the Dana, but recently after doing some checking into the rear end I have now, and listening to what some people on this board have done with them, it seems senseless to spend the money for the Dana. I only want to step up to 3.27's over my 2.77's, because I do a lot of interstate driving, and I want to retain some semblance of highway gas mileage. It occured to me that the easiest way to do this swap might be just to find a 3.27 9-bolt, which is a common enough rear end, and swap out the gears and carrier into mine.
I was a little bit confused originally, because when I bought this car I'd never heard of a 9 bolt, and one of the mechanics I talked to (not a thirdgen expert mind you) told me that the gears couldn't just be swapped out the way they can in a 10 bolt.
Is this a swap I can do? is there anything special I need to know? Apparently ending up with a open differential wont be an issue at least.
Should've spent more time researching my drivetrain and less time researching my engine.
Thanks a lot. When I get this car done, there a lot of people here who I'm gonna owe one.

That is not true anymore. Period! I have sourced and currently have for sale, brand new series 3 posi carriers and brand new 4.10 gear sets for 9 bolt rears!Don't believe me, copy and paste this www.koolmeister.com/set2.jpg
I can get ratios from 3.2x all the way to 4.1x, along with carriers.
I can supply gear sets with the install kit for much less than $500.

Miles,
I knew you were orchestrating a 9 bolt gear and carrier sale, but somehow I thought from your previous posts that it was only in 3.70 and 4.10 ratios.
Do you actually have 3.45's (I realize this is probably a stretch)? I would pay a premium for those. I thought 3.27 and 3.70 were my only options. It wasn't worth it to me to step up to a Dana or a 9 inch just to get a 3.4 or 3.5 ratio. But if I can get that with my nine bolt, it's definitely worth it.

How long is this gonna be available? Is this something you can only get now or more like a hobby/business that you will be doing for a while.. Right now a gear swap isn't doable for me but I think a 3.45 or so might be better down the road than my 3.27's...

I think "I know you are mistakin" GM does not even sell the gears for the 9bolt the only thing you can get from them is the whole axle assambly for a couple of grand and you can't get anything higher than a 3.27 gear. There are several companys that make gears for the 9 bolt and most of them are priced well under $600 which is much cheeper than the 9" that you keep talking about.
here is a list of compines that carrry gears for the 9bolt:
dts (drive train specialest)
tpis (tuned port injection specialest)
Slp (street legal performance)
many others that I can't remember.

I currently only have 4.10 ratios and carriers in stock. I can get 3.2x, 3.4x, 3.73 and 4.10 ratios.
How long it lasts depends on how much interest there is in the parts. So far, it's only been a lot of talkers, not takers.

imo you have some lazy rear end guys wjo would rather sell you
1 parts for an inferior 10 bolt
2 a 9 inch conversion
when for a reasonable cost parts for 9 bolt are around
i am amazed that people take the 9 bolt out (heavy duty option ) and install a 10 bolt rear
would anyone on this forum take out their 350 and put a 2.8 litre 6 cylinder ??????????????????
Miles,
I'm ecstatic. Can you work me up a price on 3.45's and a carrier? If the numbers seem reasonable, I'm probably in. Also, I'd love to know who the manufacturer is, but I suppose it doesn't matter much as long as they're strong enough that I can cut 1.7's on them. I'd be forever in your debt for any information you could give me. Sorry I didn't get on board earlier, I didn't realize you had all of this available to you. My email is will@cdc.net.
