Is it possible to upgrade my 2.73 rear to a posi? or would it be cheaper to get a new posi rear end.. Thanks

I think it would be cheaper and better to get a new rear end. Your current rear end will have 26 spline axles, so expect to pay $300+ for a posi unit.

You can get a PowerTrax unit to go in your open 26 spline carrier for about the same price or less than a new posi carrier. It will work as well as any clutch or cone type posi unit, and you can put it in yourself - no special tools needed.

The only down-side is it will click a little around corners. If that bothers you, it's a good excuse to upgrade your stereo.

Kevin's right, though, you should be able to find a whole rear that has posi and better gears for less money than you'd spend modifying your current rear.

hey fast_electrics, if I'm right, I think the rearend Ive got sitting in my garage is a 2.77 9-bolt posi that I think has the 26 spline axles.

sorry, that made it sound like I dont know what I have. I know its a 9-bolt posi with 2.77 gears, but I THINK it has 26 spline axles. if your interested, Im planning on selling the complete rear if you want it. it also has rebuilt disc brakes, red powdercoated axle housing, and new rotors.

All 9-bolts are 28 spline axles.

10-bolts were switched to 28 splines in 1990. Before that they were 26 spline.

Switching a drum brake rear end to disc brakes is more hassle and cost than its worth. Its much easier to just switch the whole rear end.

Kevin91z, if I did the conversion that is basically what I'd probably do.. But are the brake lines any different, for use with disk?
is there any advantage with disk over drums on the rears.. also would a Auburn 10 bolt possi, fit in a 89 camaro rear end? I don't realyl know much about the inner mechanics on cars.. usually just enough to get by..
