New Transmission and Converter: What Fluids?

Guys, need a quick answer. GOing to the shop tomorrow to drop of all the parts.

For a brand new torque converter and a brand new transmission, what fluids should I get? Don't you have to use a certain type of oil to break in a tranny and converter the same way you do an engine?

Fill it with Dexron III. You can use any kind of compatible synthetic if you want. It's just a hydraulic oil. There's no such thing as break in oil for a transmission. Just make sure there's enough oil in the tranny before you fire up the engine. The fluid will drop as the converter and cooler lines fill. Fill it to the cold mark with the engine running. Drive around the block a few times to heat up the oil. The level should be on the hot full mark when the oil is warm.

Pour about 1/2 quart/liter into the converter before putting it on.

What is ATF?

I remember reading that a new converter needs it.

Re: New Transmission and Converter: What Fluids?

I thought Dexron VI is the best fluid out there now? GM even recommends it for the older automatics. I just had all the the Dexron III flushed out of my van and replaced with Dexron VI at the Chevy dealership.
