Transmission problems and questions

I have a 86 with a '96 lt1 and a turbo 400 behind it. As of know all that I know is wrong with is that the flexplate and TC is free spinning. I am trying to decide on what to do.

1st option Pull the tranny and replace the TC and flexplate if the input shaft didnt get F'ed up.

2nd get a 96 4l60e flexplat and TC off course the DS and al lto make it work.

3rd is Im wondering since there is a 400 behind there is if a 700r would work?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Re: Transmission problems and questions

Describe this problem in more detail. You say that the flexplate and torque converter are "free spining", what do you mean? Do you mean that you can spin the flexplate and converter from underneath the car?

Re: Transmission problems and questions

Yes I can move it myself. At first I thought it was the starter so I removed it and got it tested and it worked fine. So I cleaned it up thinking a possible bad connection. When I went to reinstall it I could feel the TC moving. So I got some one to turn the car over, when it was trying to start the enging wasnt turning over and I could see the TC and flexplate just spinning.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

So the flexplate and converter were spinning when the car was being cranked over with the starter?

If the converter and flexplate is spinning and the engine isnt, i'd think the bolts in the back of the crank are broken/or backed out of the crankshaft. Orrr... the center section of the flexplate is cracked and separated from the outer ring of the plate.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

well I know I have to get a new TC and flexplate since they are welded togther. The main reason Why I threw up the other options is mainly since I have to remove the tranny anyways would those be better options? and when the people I bought the car from didnt do the job right. would any of the other options be better?

Re: Transmission problems and questions

Allright Im about to by a new TC, flexplate and crossmember ('cause the jerry rigged the stock one to work). I was wondering what else could be wrong with it. 'could the input shaft or any of the pump seals be screwed up? and could the crank be damaged at all? I know Im not gonna find any of this out until I actually pull the tranny off. Just wondering what the chances are of it being totally F'ed up.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

do you mean the torque convertor when saying TC. If so the torque convertor should not be welded to the flex plate. they are bolted.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

Yes TC is for torque converter. Yeah I know they should be bolted togther. The guy I bought it from did some backwards/shady Maint to it. Thats one reason yeah I have to get another crossmember, he used the stock one and put the Tourqe arm in a section of pipe and lashed it to the crossmember with steel wire.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

yes i do mean torque converter and sounds like you had a REAL mechanic working on that one you may run into a few problems 1 broken fly wheel which is not bad in itself but you will need to have the pump assembly in your trans gone thru there's a bushing the TC runs on along with gears that may have been damaged but when you pull trans out check everything you can see with a fine tooth comb because if he did that much to it you never know there may be anything in there

Re: Transmission problems and questions

If that is the case then I would put a 700r4 back in it. That would give you an overdrive gear and a correct toque arm mount.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

My main concern is since the th400 is working with LT1 does that mean 700r4 will work? I have never dealt with the 400 so im not too sure how they work? I would like to get either a 700r4 or a 4l60e but its gonna be alot $$$ that i dont have. maybe in a year or 2.

Re: Transmission problems and questions

the 400 is really simple. the 700r4 will work but will need a T.V. cable. The 93 camaros and firebirds had the LT1 and 700r4. so a throttle bracket and cable from that would work. Where are you at?

Re: Transmission problems and questions

I have a 700r4 out of a '88 GTA if you want it. The fluid was red and clean when I pulled it out. The motor was blown up so I could not test the trans.
