TH350 vs 700R4 vs 2004R
We're having a debate on the thirdgen email list about these transmissions. I've always thought the 700R4 was an updated TH350, while the 2004R was a tranny built from scratch. They're saying the 700R4 was brand new, and the 200 came from the TH350. Who's right?

The 700 is based on the 350 but has some radical differences. The 200-4R is based on the 200 and is in fact a 200 with an O/D section added in front of it. This means that theoretically you could make a six speed out of it!

There's already a way to make a six speed out of a 4L80E. Since the tranny is electronically controlled, someone has come up with a new valve body that gives the 2 extra gears using the OD. No reason why it couldn't be done with the 200R4

If memory serves me right. The back set of planetaries are the same setup, but not interchangeble to a TH350, the front planetaries, the input drum, the sprag set and the od are the differences. The 700 uses the TV cable for all the shifting instead of just a kickdown cable like the 350.
The 700 is an evolution of the 350, but it has "timed"shifts, whereas a th 350 more or less "stacks" the shifts.
2004R is a metric trans from the 200 3spd. the only thing it really shares with the 700R is the lockup servo, and a similar torque converter.

I must agree with Transfixleo. The 700-r4
must have come from a TH350 because you can swap the low/reverse roller clutches, the
low/reverse pistons look identical except for the slot for the parking pawl, and the
tail housings will bolt onto each other.
The 200 and the 200-4r both have one-piece
housings and share parts in the rear half.
