ford 9" pinion support seal

ford 9" pinion support seal

question, the pinion support gasket/seal has leaked a little ever since my moser 9 was new. If i remove the bolts holding the support to the 3rd member, does the pinion/support assembly just come out? or is it pressed in or something?

Sometimes it will come out and sometimes it won't. Some gears will allow the pinion to come out freely and other gears cause the pinion to bind so that the backlash has to be increased to get it out. The O ring on the outside of the pinion housing will be tight in the hole and you will have to pull hard to get it free. Why do you need to remove the complete housing to change the seal?

I want to remove the pinion support and pinion. not the whole 3rd member.

Its 6 bolts, i think.

The pinion support uses an o-ring because the pinion shims are under the retainer lip to set the pinion depth. They're not hard to change but sometimes the support is a little tight to get out. A little bit of prying with a screwdriver while turning the yoke can usually walk it out. Just make sure all the shims are put back when you reinstall the support.

I lucked out last year. My pinion o-ring was leaking so I finally got around to pulling the support to change it. I found the pilot bearing support on the inside was cracked and it was only a matter of time before it failed.

You will drain most of the oil out of the diff when the support is removed. Use a pan that will catch at least 3 quarts of oil.

The pinion housing has 5 bolts 3/8-16 that hold it in. If you just want to change the pinion seal you don't have to remove the pinion housing. You can remove the yoke and change the seal while it is still in the rear end.
