TH400 Torque Converter Recommendations please!
TH400 Torque Converter Recommendations please!
I need torque converter recommendation.
I'm building sbc350 engine with about 400 hp and 390 torque. could be little less in reality...
I have TH400 transmission swap done on car which is 1982 Camaro.
Rear end is 3,77:1, tires 245/50R16.
Camshaft Crane Blue racer 1064
duration 0.050 intake 234 exhaust 244
compression 10:1, aluminum heads 64cc/210cc
Dual plane intake 600 cfm carb. Edelbrock exhaust. Headers.
I want good performance off the line and reasonable drivability in street.
I think about 2500 stall? And what would be a brand and model to trust?
And also what are the brands to stay away from?
Thanks in advance,
Ville

im running a zz4 with 420hp with a th350 and B&M 2400 stall torkmaster converter. works out well..i think a 2500 stall would work good for you, for street use.

Since Crane Cams is no longer in business, I can't look for a cam card.
What's the advertised or total duration of the camshaft.

I'd go for more stall than that. Vigilante 2800 or possibly a 3200 would be my picks. The shorter axle ratio helps with the drivability aspect. My wife used to have a Vigilante 2800 in an LT1 with 3.73 gears. It wasn't bad. Vigilantes are known for being a little underrated. Her's stalled around 3000. She dropped 5 tenths off her 1/4 time with just the converter. They give you a free stall upgrade for I think 2 years after you buy it if you want more or less stall.
Do you drive on the highway much? 3.77 gears with a TH400 puts you around 3700 RPM at 70 mph with those tires.

OK, finally found some online cam specs. That cam is designed for blower or nitrous use. Your 600CFM carb is going to kill the performance and I doubt driving on the street will be reasonable at least not as a daily driver.
Operating range is 2800-6500. For street/strip use, you're going to want a converter that stalls around 3300. For full race, 3800-4000.

I'm possibly changing the Carb on my setup.
I have been also been thinking about more stall.
Just don't know how to decide between 2500 or 3000 stall.
My car sees highway rarely because of short rear gearing.
