84 T-5 and rearend H.P. limits?
I own an 84 Z28, and I was wondering what kind of power the transmission and rearend can handle. I am presently building a 350 with the Edelbrock performer rpm package, and I don't think the T-5 will be up to the task. I have heard that the non-world class T-5's can handle up to 265 lb/ft of torque, but I have also heard of people using these transmissions behind more powerful motors. Also, will the 7.5" rearend need to be replaced due to inadequate strength?
Thanks for any replies.

I own a 1986 SC and I'm putting in a 1984 T5 that I just rebuilt, and it's going behind a 350. I got the Centerforce dual friction clutch. We'll see soon how well it holds up. I was gonna get the Mcleod clutch setup but I'd have to wait 10 days to get it and I wanted a clutch now. Hopefully I won't have any probs with it. I'm sure something will break sooner or later. Just hope it's the tranny and not the rear. I have another tranny.

I have a T5 currently behind a 300HP 350.I don't think it'll last until spring. Had it rebuilt once. It's a WC T5 , but I still managed to mess it up pretty good with the stock 170HP 305.Needed two gears,a fork,an input shaft along with the synchros and bearings.Really think you'll only be happy with a T5 if you're not a very aggressive driver. No banging gears allowed! Am currently installing posi disc rear (3.73) that's just been rebuilt with support cover, new gears, bearings and seals. Axles looked cherry.I've been told that at my horsepower level this rear will hold up ok.Still, I plan on replacing the trans with a Tremec TKO in the spring.

I'm also running an 84 Z with a 400hp 350 and I'll be replacing the T5 for the third time this winter. I've never run any real sticky tires so I haven't had a problem with the rear end. I'm presently rebuilding a WC T5 and hoping that will hold up better.
