Dumb question on tranny pan

Okay, this maybe a stupid question.. but here goes. What is that little square pad on the inside of the 700r4 trans pan? At first I thought it was some kinda magnet, but with a closer inspection it looks to be some kinda of grease pad? What ever it was, I didn't mess with it when I changed my trans fluid.
