What the hell did they do to my tranny?

I just got my car back from the shop i had the tranny rebuilt. Now it shifts at full throttle around 4200. It shifted before at 5200. Part throttle is even worse it goes thru 1st to third to fast. Before it would hold 2 gear up to about 4000 at part throttle. The case looks the same could they have changed out the govenor or valve body? I told the shop I wanted it rebuilt not replaced because I liked the shift points.

IM going up there to bitch about it but i need a little more info about the shift points. The TV cable wouldnt make that much of a difference in how it shifts. Ive adjusted it more than once and that never changed them this much. What the hell did they do to my tranny?

Yup, they put a different governor in it and I will guess they will insist it is the right one and will give you an attitude when you want them to change it. Good luck.

Its under the round cap thing on the side of the tranny isnt? Are the valve bodies different in a IROC compared to a RS. Is it the governor that gives it the shift points? Or the valve body?

Yes it's under the round cover, Valve bodies are the same but the calibration will vary depending on original car it was installed in. It is a combination of valve body calibration and governor that will effect shift points but it is more common for the governor to be the cause.
An example would be taking a governor out of a 4.10 rear equipped S-10 with a 700 and putting it in a Camaro with 2.73's it would shift really late (if at all) even though the valve body wasn't touched.

Just to rule out a simple fix, reset the Throttle Valve cable. Could be the shop forgot to do this when they reinstalled the trans.

Check in the Tech Articles section, there's a procedure in there. Really simple, takes less than a minute after you get the hang of it.

Yes I did reset the TV cable that was the first thing i tried. I depressed the thingy and pushed the other thingy all the way in then twisted the throttle all the way and it clicked forward. I adjusted it before i had it rebuilt and it really didnt change the shift points in anyway like it is now.

I know they changed the governor or valve body out why I dont know.

Did you insist on having your tranny fixed and put back in? Not only are the Governors different (what you are noticing) but so are all of the other valves, both in the VB and the pump. Plus you might even have the smallest Servo to boot plus not having the special rear planet.

Well....I got into a fight with the owner today. They are not touching my car again IM afraid they will screw it up even worse. I dont trust him after the words we had this morning. If i cant get this one to shift like i want it after swapping the govenor out myself. IM buying a ready to install one that I can do myself. IM so sick of these so called mechs screwing with my car. They half *** fix one thing and screw up something else. No offense to anyone who is reading this. I just cant seem to find a good one. They also broke my wiper motor the superRam plenum is close to it and when they dropped the tranny it came up and hit it. They also installed the dipstick tube in the wrong location. It rubs against my heater core cover. They also stripped out my negative battery post so I had to by a new battery. The only thing they did I like was install a 2000+ stall converter.

The case looks like the original I checked the vin. I have no idea what the hell is left of my IROC tranny. This is just the thing i was afraid would happen. I told them I wanted to keep my stock tranny to just rebuild it.

Thanks for the help guys!

Mike it looks like you and I have the same problems. Transmission experts not doing their job. The biggest frustration (besides the smug attitude the "experts" give) is that transmission rebuilding is the one and only thing I wouldn't attempt because of lack of trans-specific tools and knowledge - I'd attempt ANY other repair.

If you care to read my woes:

It'll work out . . . one way or another
