Over the winter I'm going to be building a 383 that should have between 450 and 475 horses. It will be all forged because I plan on a 300 shot of nitrous for the strip. It will be going in a mid 80s S10 truck. What are my transmission options for this kind power? I was thinking TH350/400, T56, and anything Richmond. I wanna keep it to about a grand for the transmission. Thanks in advance.

not quite sure if it's a race car or not, if it is and it's 2700 lbs or less i'd use a glide with a brake, if it's heavier th350 or 400, if it's for the street th400 or a strong 700r4.

It would be driven very often if not daily. I also plan to run at the strip every weekend I can, so it should see a lot of action there too. I think it should be around 2450 with driver. It'll probably be mostly gutted. Will any of these trasmissions be capable of dumps on the line? How much do you think it'd cost to have a TH400 built to handle this?
Anyone else have any ideas on this? What about weight issues. I thought pretty much all the older auto were extremely heavy. The truck is going to be as light as I can make it, so I don't want to load it up with a big hunk of 1950s steel under it's belly.

I agree. If you're going to drag race it regularly, and it's under 2700 lbs,it'll be quicker with a powerglide.Otherwise, a TH350 or TH400 is the way to go.All of these can be built to withstand quite a bit of abuse. The TH350 has a slightly lower first gear than the 400,but without much weight, you might not see much difference between the two. I run a TH350 in my big-block street/strip 70 Nova SS,and so far it's held up well.Mods include more clutches, manual only valve body and 2800 stall,no brake.A TCI or B&M TH will cost $800-1200 without converter (another $300+)a Powerglide can be built to handle a lot more power, but will cost about the same, unless you want a transbrake.A TH700R4
can be built to handle as much as a TH350, but that 4th gear will cost you a bit more money,as even the rebuild kits for these are expensive.
