700R4 - simple fix , rebuild, or replace ?????
Have a 1986 IROC Z , 305 , 700R4 , 90K
When I bought he car @ 60K it would smoke the tires, now she barley spins in the wet grass ! It always shifted hard into 2nd usally at 4000-4500rpm under constant acceleration. Now the car shudders and shakes at 3000-3500 before the hard upshift, usally happens when trying to accelerate into traffic on the highway. Going uphill is very embarrassing now, an old lady with a walker passed me the other day !!! These problems really only occur if the car is under a load. Another problem of late is when the temperature drops below freezing sometimes the tranny will not shift out of 1st until warm. My question, is the tranny repairable, rebuildable, or in serious need of replacing ?

a experienced transmission man can tell a lot about a trans with preasure gauges but it may cost you a good bit just to find out. replacements aren't hard to come by and if you do the r&r a rebuild isn't that bad either.

are you sure it is the transmission causing the problems?

I suspect that your throttle valve in the VB is sticking. This is a common problem in 700's but it also leads to failure. What condition is the oil in? Does it hold when each shift is completed?
I'm sure the problems are in the transmision, the plugs have just been changed, O2 changed, mass air flow changed, and timing re-set. The transmission fluid and filter was changed 800 miles ago. Have had a couple people say the fluid has a burnt smell to it.
