Transmission seems to slide into second gear,Part 2-took the car to the tranny shop..

...And they said that the band (i forget which one)is not engageing like it's suppose to.the trans guy said that if i want the car to shift really hard,I'm going to have to buy the heavy duty band, and he also said something about a heavy duty roller cam or bearing or something like that, anyway to get the parts and do the work he said it would be around $400.00 I like my 700r-4,But it's sure expen$ive to modify! I've even thought about getting a th-350.Does anyone have any suggestions on this?-Thanks.

Putting in a TH350 would possibly cost about the same and you would not have overdrive. If you could get the 700r-4
fixed right for $400.00 you would probably be happier with it. It might need a complete rebuild once it is opened up, so be financially prepared!

I can't understand how it could need rebuilding when the entire tranny was rebuilt less then 5000 miles ago! Gosh,This sucks!

Was a B&M 'kit' put into it? Was the oil feed hole drilled to big? Is the checkball for 3rd leaking? all this could be the cause of premature band and 3-4 pack failure (They seem to go hand in hand)

And the ultimate question.... if you didn't rebuild it is: Was it really rebuilt? and to what extent does the word rebuilt mean to the person who did it? Just changing the one set of frictions that were damaged?

My question is, what brand of parts did your "rebuild" include? The reason I ask, is in reference to the reply I gave to your other post. The Z28 that I fixed that had your exact problem had a cheap band in it. When I put a new GM band in it, I compared them side by side, and the difference was very obvious, even for the "untrained eye" of the person who I was doing it for. His "rebuild" was only a few thousand miles old too. Thats why I use Genuine GM unless a part can be proven better (not cheaper).

My rebuild kit is the one offered by transgo,It came with pretty much everything needed to rebuild the tranny-new clutches, shift reprogramming kit, friction and steel plates,(i think the brand was alto or something like that),all necessary rings, seals, gasket and rubber kit.It seemed like a good quality kit.

The cost of the band is insignificant compared to the cost of the Removal, partial teardown, and re-installation required to replace the band, but consider, that it may be the band, and it may not! Not to mention, if you are going to pay to have it removed, you may as well take a look through it and make sure the rest is kosher. When is did the above mentioned band, I found "hot spots" on the 3-4 clutches, wich means they had a VERY short life expactancy from that point, and its easier to do it when its apart, then a week later when you loose those gears all together.

You say you took it to a shop, did they diagnose it yet? I'm sure there are many shops around, don't be afraid to get a second opinion. I, and the other people on this board can advise, but its very hard to accuratly "diagnose" over an internet message board.
