making a choice: th350 or 700r4

basically, i have an 82 with a 200c tranny, and a th350 is a direct replacement. however, a 700r4 would be very cool. my question is, which would you guys pick (not driven often, 4th would still be nice).
also, how hard would it be for an amateur to rebuild a 700r4? i have all the time in the world and i could definately take my time if need be. thanks

700R4 any day! The hardest part about the swap is moving the crossmember back.

Crossmembers and driveshafts for the 700 are all over junkyards.

I agree with Joel. GM saw fit to use the 700-r4 in Camaros for over ten years. There
is some good rebuilding information at:

Wouldn't a TH200-4R (overdrive) drop right in as well? Less rpm drop between 1st and 2nd gear. Old driveshaft should work too.

Drop in? No. The F-bodies use a torque arm and the 700's in these cars have bolt holes in the tail housing for the mount. The 200-4R doesn't have this so you would have to get a kit for this. I think the tranny mount would be located different too.

Im currently putting a 700r4 in my 82. I had a tb 350 in it and it sucks the fuel on the highway even with 2:73's and it doesent have any ballz in 1st. I suggest that you consider what kind of rear gears you have and where your engine makes power before you decide. Example: Im building a mild "economy minded" 355 and have a 3:42 rear end. The perfect choise for my setup is a 700r4.
Post what you have and if you have any near future plans for upgrades and we can help you a bit more.

i am putting a 350HO in this winter. It has 330 horsepower 380 ft lbs torque, no smog, it will have hedman elite heders and some form of dual exhaust. on planned on getting 3.73's. my question is what do i have to do to get the tranny to work with my setup without an onboard computer? thanks

Will the 700R4 fit in an 82? I've noticed that the 82s have a different floor board design than 83s and up. I've got the T350 in my car now and would like to upgrade to a 700R4.
