Transmission: 4 speed :( wish it was 5
Question

does anyone know if the 2.8 came with the option of a 5 speed? i have an 82 with the 2.8 and a 4 speed, but i would love the 5. just cant seem to find if there is a compatible 5 speed. i found that an 83 with the 2.8 has the option of a 5 speed but not sure on the 82.

i would think that the engine would be the same in the 82 and 83 and even if it came out of an 83 i would guess that it would mount up just like the 4 speed, but does anyone know for sure?

Re: Question

sure you can use a 5 speed, it may need a different bellhousing. The t5's that came in these cars sits ar a 17degree angle in the tunnel, i dont think the 4 speeds did.

Everything else will still work. You could also swap out your current pedal setup for the newer hydraulic slave setup and get rid of the z-bar setup you have now. if you want

Re: Question

'83 was the first year for the T5, and the last year for the non-hydraulic release, so you'll need a bellhousing for an '83 T5 2.8L F-car, but the T5 itself can be from any '83-'88 2.8L F-car. '89 no longer had a cable speedometer, so that would add more hassle, unless you have the digital dash option. The '88-'92 T5s are better, being the World Class version. You can use any F-car T5 shifter, or any aftermarket F-car T5 shifter. I like the WC with a Steeda Tri-Ax shifter, then modify the stick by unbolting it, heating it, bending it about 17 degrees, then letting it cool before bolting it back on. If you do this, make the bend as low as possible.
