1986 700R4 to TH350

Ok, I have a 86' T/A with a 305 in it, it has the 700R4 that doesn't shift into any gear. I want to put a TH350 in it's place. What do I need to know in order to accomplish this...Thanks for any help.....

Classic industries sells a kit for about $130, and you'll need a slightly longer driveshaft too. (3" longer).

unless you get a th350 with a 9" tailshaft, then the stock ds will work.

Other way around.

6" tailshaft, need longer driveshaft.
9" tailshaft, stock driveshaft works.

I may put a TH350 in my 2nd gen for a year to see how it does. I'm not entirely sure I'd benefit from overdrive with the cam I have planned, and I can't find a cheap M22 locally.

Ok. Maybe my brain is fried but here is what you said:

"unless you get a th350 with a 9" tailshaft, then the stock ds will work."

un⋅less
/ʌnˈlɛs, ən-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [uhn-les, uhn-] Show IPA
Use unless in a Sentence
–conjunction
1. except under the circumstances that: I'll be there at nine, unless the train is late.
–preposition
2. except; but; save: Nothing will come of it, unless disaster.

So what you said was, if you get anything EXCEPT a 9" tailshaft, then the stock driveshaft will work.

I think you meant to say "as long as you get a th350 with a 9" tailshaft, then the stock driveshaft will work".

now run the second half of your statement and mine together and then it will make sense. btw, you can also get the kit through jegs, summit, year one, hawks, and numerous other places. as stated if you get a 9" tailshaft housing, then you can run the stock ds, unless you already have the th350c then you need the short housing (6")

this is the kit i used, fairly complete. as these things go some "adjustment" will be required to fit your application.

changing to the th350 is a bad move if the car is a driver and not a race car. it doesn't have overdrive.
I think it's a mistake IMO

Yeah but a 700R4 is a worthless piece of junk. I used to blow them up 12 years ago on slightly modified thirdgens.

I got the stupid idea to run one for a while in my C4 two years ago, a rebuilt unit with the full transgo shift kt and a $600 torque converter. For performance use, what a POS. Super low first gear, crappy 2nd to third spacing.

Then of course, if you run any type of cam at all, overdrive is rather useless unless you're turning some serious MPH or have a lot of rear end gear.

If you're building a performance car, with a camshaft that needs a 3000 stall converter, you can't expect to cruise at 1500rpm on the highway.

When you say "Driver" do you mean literally, Daily driver as in primary vehicle?
If so then I almost agree with you, but then again I can't help but recall all those years of driving TH350 cars to work every day that were built before the 700R4 is invented.

Floor guy/Pete is probably going to disagree with me on this, but opinions are opinions. Some of you guys love your 700R4s. I hate the things.

I had a TH350 in my last DD, and I am now building one to put in my thirdgen. I really don't like my 700R4.
