Whats the best Rear for my car???

I have a 10 bolt rear in my 1983 Camaro with 3:73 gears... I was wondering what would be the best way to either replace the rear with a posi... or to build up my existing 10 bolt... What could i change?? Would i be better getting a posi from another car?? Do i need a different differential?? And as a fyi i make around 400 Hp with my 355, i would like to find something that would be plenty strong. Because who knows what my plans are for this car in the future... Thanks, any info would be great help

A rear end from a '90 to /92 would be ebtter because they have 28 spline axles instead of 26. You can put an Eaton Posi in it as long as it has 3.23 to 3.73 gears. If you plan on putting more power through it then you are going to have to get a stronger rear end. I recommend a Moser 12 bolt, which will run about $2220 plus shipping. This will be built the way you want it, whith your choice of gears and a Eaton Posi. All new parts.

Re: Whats the best Rear for my car???

You could also buy a 28 spline posi for your 7.5" 10 bolt and also buy aftermarket 28 spline axles for a 90-92 third gen and put them into your diff. All the improvements that you do to the 10 bolt won't fix the tiny ring and pinion. You'll usually break the teeth off before hurting anything else in the diff.

A stronger diff isn't a cheap option. There are no junkyard diffs that can be a cheap or easy swap. Your best options if you break your current diff is to buy an aftermarket, bolt in, 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60. They're not cheap but that's the price of having lots of power.

I pushed a beefed up 10 bolt into the 11 second range without hurting it while others have broken them while driving on the street. You roll the dice and take your chances.

Welcome to TGO. More info in the following FAQ about 10-bolts:
