High RPM's low speed, tranny loads up
Hi Guys,
Here the situation. Whenever I step on the gas the car "loads up" than once I release the gas a bit it might break free but keeps the RPM's in the 5k range!!! So I really have no "flooring it" availability. As well when I first start the car my idle is 2500 RPM's! and normal driving range I am around 1000 Rpm's higher than i should be, specially on freeway driving. Doing 90 in 4th (OD) puts me about 4000 RPM. I am dropping in an LT1 so any info is greatly Appreciated before the beast goes in.
Thanks,
James

Sounds like the tranny is slipping like crazy. If so, it needs rebuilt/replaced if you have driven it like that for any amount of time. With 3.73's and short tires I turn around 2500-2600 on the interstate. Is it even shifting into 4th? How accurate is your tach? The high idle is unrelated to the tranny.

The Car has always been like that. It does have good pick up and go once I am moving but only if I ease it up aggressively. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but that’s the best way to describe it. Any suggestions on a rebuild so that it can handle the LT1 or an LS1 which might be the more likely choice? Im never taking my car to the track I just like to get to vegas fast and look good doing it. So street is the best way all around would it help if I dropped in a 4th gen rear with the 3.42 posi?

Well, if it is high speed highway cruising on deserted desert highways, then go for 2.73 gears. With an LS1 hitting 130mph and sitting there would be a laugh.
The speeding ticket wouldn't, though

lol Thanks sitting bull lol
The only speeding ticket I have ever received was on my old 94 explorer sport if you can imagine that. Knock on wood. What did you mean when you said hit 130 and not go anywhere, do you mean the RPM's would be really low? I already chirp right now when I take off so more chirping would be bad lol I like peeling out but when you barely step on the gas and it chirps thats bad... I either load up when floored or chirp when barely stepped on... My tranny must really hate me, though it has gone back and forth from AZ/NM border three times now in the past three months and Im in So. Cal lol Should I change the torque converter for such a engine change?

I meant that sustained cruising at 130 mph with 2.73s and an LS1 would be a piece of cake. Your rpms would be quite within the comfort range of an LS1, especially in overdrive.
