I know its a piece of junk, but whats going on???
A few weeks after i did a tbi to tpi swap, i lost the 3rd and 4th gear clutches in my 700r4. Then i bought a rebuilt 700r4. after i put it in, i drove it around for a while, and it seemed to be fine. But soon, it started to slip when it shifted to second. Its pretty much a piece of junk to begin with, but it gets me where i need to go. Other problems are that sometimes when the tranny is cool, it has very crisp shifts, and sometimes does it when its hot. Also, when i put in reverse or drive, sometimes it goes into gear so hard my engine stalls, but every time i put it in drive, it takes a couple of seconds(seriously, like 1.....2....shift) before it goes in gear. I guess i'm just trying to figure what the stupid pos is doing. Whats going on with it? Would i need to get the rebuilt tranny rebuilt? I still have my old one too. Would a shift kit help oil flow to quiken shift-in-drive response and tighten up the 1-2 shifts? Would the fact that me having an after market chip from TPIS have anything to do with it? Help, please!!!!!
The delay in reverse is a common problem with '87 and later 700's (Yea, I know, the 'better' ones). It will require removing the tranny to address that problem. The stalling problem makes me think the pump is probably not too good anyhow but that is just an educated guess. I would suggest fixing the original tranny along with a TransGo Shift Kit or Reprogramming Kit.
