I was once told that wheel spacers were not legal at the track (at least on the rear). Is there a real danger of these things shearing off? I want to go with 4th gen wheels eventually, I already got a BW/disc rear and don't want to drop in a 4th gen unless I have to. Thanks...

Not sure about NHRA legality but you will need longer wheel studs to compensate for the spacers. We run spacers with long studs on all 4 wheels of our SCCA road race Triumph Spitfire without a problem.
i have mixed thoughts about them. I had a wheel fall off my car at englishtown this past april because the spacer lugs loosened and detached from the hub. The reason it happened was because they were installed improperly without washers by a shop. I had them reinstalled correctly, and I have had no problems at all with them since april. Of course the car maybe has 500 miles on it since april, so it's not like it's a daily driver by any mean.
But they still kind of make me uneasy, and the shop that installed them actually said they could fail me on inspection for them.

i belive you can only use like a 1/8" on the front only, they are dangerous on ANY car as is make the grip on the lugs looser and doesnt hold the wheel on as good, nothing would be worse then hauling some a$$ and having a wheel come off

If you use long studs, there shouldn't be a problem, a TON of SCCA race cars use them. Granted, they usually don't see hard launches.

formul8, yep, that was me.... I actually came out ok on damage. All the wheel studs on that hub, the gfx piece under the door and the fender were all that bit it. Only thing that shows now is some paint that doesn't quite match.

I did the fender a second time hoping to get damn close on the paint, but it's not quite right. Maaco painted the whole car last, and they apparently just invented a color of their choosing. Forget trying to get touchup paint. The car's gonna get repainted right after the motor and trans are all done.
TempesT68, the type of spacer we're talking about actually has holes in it to bolt onto the stock hub, and then studs to bolt the wheel onto. They come in thicknesses of 1" and up. My car has 2" spacers all around to fit 4th gen SS rims.

technically, you will be using adapters. these bolt to the studs and have another set of studs for the wheel. they are about 1.5 inches thick. but. yes NHRA illegal. now if you are just going to the track for a test and tune night. don't worry. if you are using that car for drag racing in the NHRA sanction, then you can't have.
