Turbo 400 problems

A friend and I rebuilt a th400 last year including a B&M trans pak. It later broke the intermediate roller clutch race so we replaced it with the same type (against my suggestions) he sold the truck too a friend of his, now his friend broke it again and paid a shop $800 to replace the roller clutch and some other parts with 4L80E parts, I am not familiar with this type of upgrade. They put the trans in the truck and it now has no 2-3 shift. I helped them and checked the governor, detent soliniod and modulator valve. The pan is full of large aluminum chunks. They are removing the trans for me to fix. What should I look for as far as misbuilds? It has a new TCI streetfighter converter. What are the chances of this being bad from the factory? I have a stock th400, could it's int.roller clutch handle the 420HP in this 4000 pound truck if I keep the waved plates in and leave the valve body stock? I may just swap transmissions but I don't want it to fail again.
Any suggestions are welcome and apreciated, Thanks..
PS the trans shop went out of business.

Could be about anything. Best to just get it open and report back to us. Bad converter from the get go? Hmmm, I've only seen that a couple thousand times or so, so maybe.

Well I got it apart and found the outer most sealing ring on the center support off and in the middle oil groove. I believe this is the direct circuit oil ring so I guess this is the problem. I still haven't found the source of all the alum particles. Don't really feel like working on it so I'll disassemble it more later to look for other problems.

The first three seal the direct drum and the last is for lube.
