The transmission in my Camaro has over 200,000 miles on it and is getting a little tired. I was thinking about rebuilding it myself. I'm not a complete rookie with car work but I have never worked on a transmission before and would probably pick up a Haynes manual or something just so I didn't miss anything. I just wanted to ask some of you more experienced members how hard it is to rebuild a 700R4 and about how many hours does it take if I were to take it to a transmission shop?

Neither Haynes nor Chilton have any info you'll find helpful, you'd do better to get a 700R-4 book from TCI. There are a couple of special tools required, I made my own. But if you can't do that, you'll have to rent them. You can do it yourself, and save about $1000. Plan on it taking you a couple of weekends.

last weekend on extreme 4X4 they did a rebuild of a 700 r4 on the show. They made it look somewhat easy. You can look up the show and watch it on the internet sometime, was a good and exact demonstration on how to rebuild tranny's

Yeah I saw that too! It was pretty badass! I think ALMOST everyone could do it with the right tools and space. I've never done an auto trans, but it's something I'd love to do.

I used one of their books "Engine Blueprinting" for one of my classes in school and was very in depth with quality color pictures highly recommended!
Ill be rebuilding my 700r4 this winter hopefully...its either that or an engagement ring.

Man F marriage! Build the tranny cause if the relationship is good it'll last on it's own. Tell her that too cause if she disagrees she's just another materialistic C**t. Put all that marriage money toward nitrous and slicks.Originally Posted by chas0218

Do you think that video would be enough or should i get the book i really need to rebuild my tranny too
Video is good, ATSG book is better, both if you are wanting to have some confidence at doing this yourself.
