Transfixleo, send me in the right direction?
Its non-thirdgen, sorry, buts its rwd gm!
Friends got an 80 monte carlo thats in really good shape, but the tranny went south.
So my friend got activated and sent overseas, and he gave me the car. I'd like to fix it for him and give it back when he comes home, he loves that car, he's had it since he was sixteen, that was ten years ago.
I know he wants to keep it, but he just couldn't store it anywhere.
Its a 1980 monte carlo, auto trans, v-6.
it has about 150,000 on it, and its mint.
tranny probs:
first gear works great, but only when its selected manually on the shifter.
Put in in drive or d2, and the car almost kinda moves forward an inch or two, as if its jumping right into those gears, skipping first.
won't shift out of first.
Its not the torque convertor, thats happened in my iroc, so i know what that's like.
whats my best bet to ressurect the beast?
tranny swap from the yard?
is it something I can fix w/o removing the tranny?
This car is in perfect shape, and i think it be real cool to give it back to him when he comes home from service.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!!!

I'm not 100% clear on what it is doing. Does it seem to be in a higher gear when in D or D2? Does it just not shift out of Man1? Does it just stop moving in D or D2? Please clarify and i will get back to you. What is the oil condition/level like?

Thanks for the fast response!
The car will only move in Man1.
Drive and Man2 do nothing.
If you're moving in Man1 and try to shift it into Man2 or Drive, the engine just revs and the car stops moving.
The tranny fluid looks and smells OK, and the level is near full.
The car's transmission always functioned flawlessly, it was never abused by him and the problem occured suddenly, it never slipped or failed to downshift etc..
Thanks!!

Easy! The Low Roller Clutch has failed. When you put it in Man1, the Low/Reverse Clutches come on and that is what you are taking off on. I ASSume that when you run it up to @20 and manually shift up it will probably keep moving right? This is because you have reached the point where it would up shift and the Roller no longer is holding.

when I shift up from first at about 20, nothing happens, the car rolls to a stop, like its slipped out of gear.
So if this is the low roller clutch, what are my options?
is this somthing I can fix myself?
do I have to remove the trans to get at the low roller clutch?
once again I thank you for your help.

If it has a v-6, it is possibly a TH250C.
Check for a band adjustment screw and lock-
nut high on the side of the case. If it is
a 250, you will probably want to replace it with a TH350 or a TH350C rather than repair the TH250C.

Does this car have Reverse? I ask that because now it almost sounds like there may be stripped or broken parts. I am assuming this is the 250C which actually, if not asked to do too much is just fine but if the roller is gone then perhaps you might want to just swap in a 350 if you can find one that is buildable otherwise it isn't too hard to fix that problem on this tranny but it does have to come out and apart.
