After going through 2 700R4's this year, both built by someone who knows what they are doing, I bought a t56 out of a 97 trans-am. They can handle a lot more HP/Torque than even a built 700R4.
I know there are guys who can build an auto to take the punishment, but it would cost almost as much as the 6 speed in going to, and a manual trans is so much more fun
A stock 5 speed won't stand up either - that's why GM never offered the L98/5 speed
combo in a car - they only came with the 305.

My 89 Formula
13.98 @92 mph 2.06 60 ft
1989 Firebird Formula, WS6 Package, ZZ4 Crate engine.
MSD 8.5mm Super wires, SLP 58 mm throttlebody, Edelbrock TES headers, SLP 3" SS exhaust,
Random Tech 3" hi flow cat, K&N filter, 700R4 trans w/ vette 2/4 shift servo, worked valve body, kevlar band,
2200 rpm stall converter, Borg Warner 9 bolt 327 rear (full poly mounts) Hotchiss panhard rod, Lakewood LCA's,
Spohn subframe connectors, custom chip, Walbro hi-flo fuel pump.
Accel stuff: 24 pound injectors, Superram intake, Large tube runners, billet distributor, supercoil.
In the works: 1997 Trans Am T56 Trans swap, Spohn crossmember/torque arm/driveshaft loop

whatever you do, don't go T5...they will not handle the abuse, at least for long.
a t56 would laugh off 400/400, but they are pricey.
So your best bet is to get a built up 700r4. There's a lot of options in that department, but you will have to spend some money.

Your '84 tranny will have trouble with that level of power. You will need more upgrades than just installing a VB kit, although TransGo is the only way to go. As was mentioned it will cost some money but then again so will a change to a standard and trust me on this, those parts ren't cheap either when they break.
I have been through 4 trannies with my setup. My advice to you, go all out on the transmission or go with something else. If you dont do everything to it, it will come apart and take out all the **** you bought. My current tranny is taking track abuse as well as daily street abuse.
I have blue clutch plates and steeles. A 2200 stall converter, corvette servo, no yo yo front pump springs(Increases line pressure) governor gear with lighter springs(allows higher revving in first)10 vein pump(yours will have the 7 I believe.)(or maybe its 6 and 9) Anyways get the front pump from an 87 or newer 700r4. The prior to trannys are naturally weaker. Oh by the way, dont use a b&m shift kit. Go with the transgo. It is easier on the tranny.

Bright red 87 GTA with I have stock 3.27 gears,2200 stall,B&M shift kit, TRW forged 9.75:1 pistons, comp cams pushrods, edelbrock valvesprings, 462 camel hump heads with 2.02in/1.60ex redrilled for angled plugs, 3 angle valve job, ported and polished, performer RPM intake, mallory fp regulator, edelbrock 750 CFM carb, hei ignition(new) with 40,000 volt coil,No cat, flowmaster 1 chamber mufflers, hedman 1 5/8 full length headers, edelbrock cam with 488/501
Best Run 1/8 mile 8.62 at 84MPH on street tires, Consistantly run 8.8. 60 foot times 2.3
