scary 2-3 shift
scary 2-3 shift
Irregardless of if the tranny is warmed up yet, the 2-3 shift will be sloppy with a lag long enough to go over redline and my digital tach to flash at me. At least this happens when i'm on it, but there is always a lag between gears. I would like to be enlightened as to what is wrong and how much life is left in the trans. The fluid is still bright pink and up to level- has been so from the day i bought it(3-4,000 miles ago). I believe the tranny to be original, i have the reciepts since 125,000, and i'm at 191,000. I intend on replaceing trans before putting in 350, but would really like to know how long i might have before it explodes.

Do you REALLY think anybody knows how long you have left ? It really is a stupid question. It's obviously about to go. It could work for another day or another decade. Just get it fixed as soon as you can.

it's anyone's guess....there's no formula for when it'll blow up. if it's original though, congratulations, that's the highest mileage original non rebuilt 700r4 i've ever heard of. My roomate made it to 173,000, but he blew his v6 motor, and pulled the still working trans so he could swap to v8.
i'd swap it out of there ASAP, but i'd be just as worried about the motor as you are about the trans for the time being. I blew a motor years ago when my dying 700r4 slipped out of gear and i over-revved the tired motor. If the motor has 190k on it, you'll probably break it hitting redline more than a few times.

That really would be hard to answer. It is also possible that someone did a 'home-made-shift-kit' and opened up the 2-3 feed too big. You can then get a cutloose on the upshift. Especially if this has been doing this for a long time like that. A 'Vette Servo in place of a 554 or maybe a 553 could help you out on that. Doing the VB right in the first place is the real answer though.
I have home made shift correction modifications, it did cut loose on 2-3 shift until I tightened the 3-4 clutch pack. Stock is .049 to .113. Performance is tighter, mine is now .015 with 7 frictions and it moves my 2900 pound truck with a 365 HP 350 down the quarter in 13 seconds at 107 MPH with no slippage at all (except tires). It's also a fresh rebuild with raybestos clutches and no other aftermarket parts. Been together almost a year now.
